River Boyne and the valley of King's County Meath
The Boyne has historical, archaeological and mythical connotations. It is located close to Dublin and is ideal for a private day tour from Dublin. The Greek geographer Ptolemy drew a map of Ireland in the 2nd century which included the river Boyne. The entire area is one of outstanding beauty, with rolling hills, pastures and medieval field structures. From Neolithic passage tombs, ancient ritual sites to monastic settlements the Boyne valley has it all.
Battle of the Boyne County Meath
A major battle in Irish history, took place along the River Boyne near Drogheda in 1690 during the Williamite war in Ireland. Both kings commanded their armies in person. William had 36,000 men and James had 25,000 - the largest number of troops ever deployed on an Irish battlefield. English, Scottish, Dutch, Danes and Huguenots (French Protestants) made up William’s army (Williamites), while James' men (Jacobites) were mainly Irish Catholics, reinforced by 6,500 French troops sent by King Louis XIV. At stake were the British throne, French Dominance in Europe and religious power in Ireland.
Hill of Slane & Saint Patrick's Pascal Flame
Visit the Hill of Slane which over looks the entire Boyne valley, this is the place where in 433 AD Saint Patrick would have lit the Pascal fire on the Hill of Slane. The Irish high king's ruled from this area of Ireland at the ancient Hill of Tara. Saint Patrick's actions were seen as a direct challenge to their authority. There is something for everyone on a visit to the Boyne Valley. Castle's Passage Tomb's, Celtic crosses, archaeological monuments, myths and legends.
