Glendalough is a remarkable place hidden away deep in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. Glendalough is an evocative, misty glen, it is a magical place, with an ancient, monastic settlement built on the edge of dark lakes and surrounded by hills, forests and waterfalls.
This is one of the must see places while visiting Dublin. Its name is derived from the Irish gleann da locha, meaning “the glen of the two lakes.” Things always seem to be in soft focus here as you wander the rocky paths beside the ancient chapels. The ruins date from the 6th century, when a monk who became known as St. Kevin chose this secluded setting, which was already used as a Bronze Age tomb, for his home.
Although much of the monastic city is in ruins, there’s a nearly perfect round tower, 31m (102 ft.) high and 16m (52 ft.) around the base, as well as hundreds of timeworn Celtic crosses and several chapels. You will have free time to walk through this magnificent glacial valley to visit the lower lake.

County Wicklow has featured in many blockbuster movies that include Brave Heart, Michael Collins, and Excalibur, PS I Love You, enjoy the spectacular locations as we travel through the Garden of Ireland.
Between the mountains are a number of deep glacial valleys, most notably Glenmacnass, Glenmalure and Glendalough, while corrie lakes such as Lough Bray Upper and Lower, were gouged out by ice at the head of the glaciers, during the last ice age. On the trip south we will divert east at the Sally Gap to look at Lough Tay "The famous Guinness Lake" and Lough Dan.

Henry II to curb the expansionist policies of Richard de Clare, (Strongbow).
Enter the massive three-storied Keep, the central stronghold of the castle. This
twenty-sided tower, was protected by a ditch, curtain wall and
moat. Trim Castle was used as a film location for the Brave Heart movie.
