Trinity College, established by Elizabeth I in the late 16th century, (originally called the University of Dublin) Trinity is Ireland’s foremost university. At first the university was open to both Protestants and Catholics, but then in 1637 the university authorities determined to ban all Catholics from attending. The restriction was lifted in 1793, but the Catholic church responded with its own ban. Catholics only returned to study at the University in the 1970s. Amongst its alumni, are the writers Wilde, Swift and Beckett. The library is where you will find one of Ireland’s national treasures, the illustrated Book of Kells, dating from the 8th century.
General Post Office. The building is steeped in history – it was the headquarters for the leaders of the Easter rising of 1916, and was repeatedly shelled by the British military. You can still see the bullet marks in the stone columns of the building’s facade.
Guinness Storehouse is a part of the enormous Guinness Brewery. Learn about the ingredients and craft of brewing; visit the Gravity Bar at the very top of the building, which offers you panoramic views across Dublin city.
Kilmainham Gaol was closed in 1924. Following extensive renovations to the adjoining courthouse, which has now opened as an interpretative centre and museum, giving many insights into the sufferings of the Irish people under colonial rule. Exhibits chronicle the political and penal history of the prison. Kilmainham jail is where the leaders of the 1916 Easter rising were executed.
Highlights along Irelands Ancient East. County Wicklow is known as “the garden of Ireland”. We will include a fully guided private walking tour at Glendalough. Next stop – Powerscourt House and gardens in County Wicklow.
Powerscourt is one of the most beautiful gardens in Ireland! The gardens were laid out over two main periods. When the house was rebuilt in the decade after 1731, the surrounding grounds were also remodeled. The design reflected the desire to create a garden, which was part of the wider landscape. And what a view it is! To the North formal tree plantations framed the vista from the house, while a walled garden, fishpond, cascades, grottos and terraces lay to the South.
This private shore excursion from Dublin port offers the very best of Dublin city, with an opportunity to escape the city and discover the spectacular countryside in County Wicklow.
